“And of His (Allah’s) signs is that He has created mates for you from your own kind that you may find peace in them and He has induced between you love and mercy. Surely there are Signs in this for those who reflect. ” [Qur’an, 30: 21]
The spousal union is the most sacred relationship in Islam, primarily for the following reasons:
1) It is by choice. Husband and wife join in a marital relationship with their free will and choice. We do not choose our parents, children or any other relatives. They all are divinely decreed bonds which are immutable. Of course, we must accept and honor them; and duly deliver our obligations towards them; in particular, the parents’ rights. However, the decisions made with free will and choice are consequential and held to a higher degree of scrutiny and evaluations.
2) The primary objective of marriage is the protection of moral sanctity and integrity of personal character, shielding self-honor, and safeguarding human dignity.
3) Another objective of marriage is the propagation of the human race with chastity of lineage for the continuation of a morally healthy human civilization.
4) It is the most intimate and exclusive relationship, not permissible in any other setting by any moral code or civilized society, and is regarded as sanctified between spouses in every culture.
5) Spousal companionship is the longest cohabitation (living together) in life till the end. When grown up, children part away from parents and start their own lives and raise their own families to continue the cycle.
6) Allah SWT promises that righteous spouses will be united in Paradise to eternally continue their cohabitation: “Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, in happiness.” [Q, 43: 70] This will be in recognition of their diligence in observing the sanctity of their relationship and fulfilling mutual obligations: “This is the Paradise which you inherit because of your deeds which you used to do (in the fulfillment of your spousal duties).” [Q, 43: 72]
Enforcing a healthy relationship, Allah SWT alerts the spouses that He is all-time watchful over them (see Q, 4: 1). The Prophet Muhammad SAW appraises a good husband: “The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family.” [Nasa’i, Majah, and Tirmidhi] He describes a good wife in even more captivating and glamorizing words: “Everything in this world is valuable, but the most precious provision of this world is a pious woman.” [Muslim]
